Applied AI Engineer

The Role

As an Applied AI Engineer at VZ Labs, you'll work on the intelligence layer that sits between human language and commerce infrastructure.

You'll work on multi-agent systems ✦ , context engineering, building evaluation systems, and more. Our LLMs write prompts for themselves, write prompts for other LLMs, write their own tool calls, call other LLMs.

You'll work on the entire chain of value of an LLM system in production.

Example Problem

An example problem you might work on is: you have 200,000 SKUs, how do you efficiently search through them? They all have different descriptions and slight variations. Someone texts "I need a 3/8 inch wire cutter with insulated handles that can handle 12 gauge copper." How do you search through a massive catalog to find exactly what they need?

Requirements

• Daily, heavy use of LLMs with strong intuition for what they can and cannot do
• Experience building with LLMs - context engineering, evaluation systems, multi-agent architectures
• Care deeply about our mission of uncovering the new mechanics that will shape how people interact with commerce in their daily lives
• Strong engineering fundamentals - your AI systems need to run reliably at scale

Nice to Have

• Experience with reinforcement learning or online learning systems
• Background in information retrieval or search systems
• Experience with e-commerce
